Hail to the King!
Imagine what it would be like to live in a monarchy instead of a democracy.
WHAT TO DO:
Pretend that it has just been announced that, due to a new law, the president of the United States will no longer be an elected office. The current president will, like a king, continue to lead the country until the end of his life. At that point, the new law states, the presidency will be passed down to that president’s oldest child.
Now imagine for a moment how this might change the U.S. government we know. What would be different? What kinds of things might stay the same? Would you prefer to have a king rule the land—or do you think electing a president is a better system?
Could this kind of change ever really happen in the United States? Why or why not?
