Pop-up Book
For this assignment you will choose at least 2 characters from the books we are reading in class, “How to Steal a Dog,”, “Behind Enemy Lines”, “Call of Courage”, “Brian’s Hunt”, and “The Tiger Rising”. One of the characters must be Rob from “The Tiger Rising”. The other character/characters need to be from your other independent reading book. You may then also include additional characters from any of the books listed.
Compare and contrast two or more of the characters. How did the characters interact with each other? Explain in your book how the different characters in each story responded to the challenges they faced.
Compare the major events in the different stories. What were the specific details that you found in the text? Did these events change the character in any way? Did the event change the way the characters interacted with other characters in the story?
How are the settings the same or different? Did the setting have any effect on how the characters responded to their challenges?
You will complete this homework assignment on white construction paper. The pages must be colorful and the writing portion must be done in pen. Have a peer edit your writing before you complete your final project. Then, read your story aloud to another student to make sure there are no any errors in your story. This will be a minimum of 5 pages with a title page.
This assignment is due Friday, October 1st. All books will be posted outside in the hallway for viewing.
Follow the directions below to create a pop-up book.
Draw a rough sketch of the scene you wish to illustrate, and decide which elements will “pop up.”
Fold a piece of construction paper in half horizontally. (An 8 1/2-by-14 -inch sheet will allow more writing space.)
To create each pop-up tab, cut two slits along the folded edge. Varying the lengths of the tabs will make the scene more three-dimensional.
Open the paper up, and gently pull each of the pop-up tabs forward.
Fold the paper again so that each of the pop-up tabs falls into the center. Make a crease at the base of each tab.
Open the paper up and illustrate the background.
On a separate sheet of paper, draw the pop-up elements of your scene. Cut the elements out and glue them to the front of a tab.
Use a ruler and pencil to lightly draw guidelines on the paper in front of your pop-up scene. Write a paragraph describing the scene.
Bind your book together by gluing the bottom of one page to the top of the next, until all of the pages are joined. Use a glue stick instead of glue so that the paper doesn’t buckle. Be careful not to put glue where a tab on the opposite page will be or it will glue the tab closed and the page will rip.
Make a cover for your book by wrapping a large sheet of construction
paper over pop-up pages. Glue it into place. Add a title and a cover illustration
