The President’s Budget
It costs money to run Green Hope Elementary. Most schools and roads are paid for by the government. To find the money to pay for these services, every person who works in our country pays a part of his or her income to the government. This payment is called a tax. People who make up the government have to make decisions about how to spend that money. These decisions eventually are expressed in a written plan that tells how the tax payments, or revenue, will be spent. This plan is called a budget.
What kinds of things do you think the government needs to include in its budget? You are now acting as a member of the budget committee, does the budget need to include hospitals? National parks? Social services? The military? Schools?
