Now & Then Flip Book
Materials:
· Copies of page 45, scissors, colored markers or pencils, white construction paper, glue sticks
· Learning about the past helps us to better understand the present, and one way to learn about the past is to contrast the differences between the way people lived back then to the way we live today.
CREATING THE FLIP BOOK
· Take a copy of the flip book template on page 45. Glue the templates to white construction paper.
· Cut each of the dotted lines on your templates, making sure to stop where the dotted line meets the solid line. Then you should fold the flaps down so that the ruled lines are on the inside of the fold.
· Place the panels horizontally in front of you so that the flaps lift up.
· On the cover of each flap, you should use creative lettering to write the title of some aspect of pioneer life that you will contrast with your present life (such as travel, cooking, houses, medical care, chores, occupations, the role of women, etc.). You should also draw a picture or icon that represents the topic on which you will be reporting.
· On the inside of each flap, you should compare and contrast the way things were in the time of the pioneers with the way things are today. Write this information in two complete paragraphs, one for THEN and one for NOW.
· Attach it to the green construction paper and turn into the Center Basket with the title “My How Things have Changed”.
Then you will attach it to Green construction paper with the title: “Story Quilt of my Westward Adventure”.

Tracing the Old Spanish Trail--
· The Old Spanish Trail was a continuation of the Santa Fe Trail, with its jumping-off point at Santa Fe. From here, pioneers continued in a northwest direction. Once they crossed the Colorado River they turned southwest, crossed the Mojave Desert and Sierra Madre Mountains, and headed to Los Angeles.
· After they have traced all four trails, fill in the map key with the color that corresponds to each trail. Keep their maps handy so you can use them for the next activity.
