Louisiana Purchase Map
and Pop-Up Monuments
MATERIALS:
· Copies of pages 35 and 36, scissors, legal-size copier paper (8 " by 14"), glue sticks, colored markers or pencils
· Follow the directions to the template on page 35 to complete your keys and maps. Then, cut out the completed maps—you will use this as the cover of the pop-up books they will create—and put it in your project folder.
· Take one sheet of legal-size copier paper. Follow the directions below to make the pop-up monuments page.
CREATING THE POP-UP
· Place the copier paper horizontally on the table in front of you, then measure 5 " from the left-hand side and fold it in.
· Now measure 3" from the right-hand side and fold the paper in.
· Next tuck this panel behind the first fold so it looks like a matchbook. Along the folded edge, make a small pencil mark at the following six measurements: 1", 2", 3 3/4 ", 4 3/4 ", 6 1/2 ", and 7 1/2 ".
· From these marks, you should now cut a 1 " slit along the folded edge up toward the “matchbook” fold on the opposite side.
· Open the paper and gently pull each pop-up tab forward. Then fold the paper again so that each pop-up tab falls into the center. This will make a base of each tab.
· Next, color the monuments of Jefferson, Lewis and Clark, and Sacajawea on page 36. Then cut out the figures, and glue them to the tabs.
· Divide the long horizontal panel underneath the monuments into three sections. Write a sensational headline that describes the role each figure played in the acquisition and exploration of the Louisiana Territory.
· Now open up the long horizontal strip, then divide this area underneath the monuments into three vertical sections, and write a news article that describes the importance of each figure’s involvement with the Louisiana Territory.
· Using a glue stick, you should then glue the map of the Louisiana Purchase to the cover of the pop-up book.
· Attach the pop-up book to a sheet of Green construction paper and turn into the red basket.
